Dr. Dominik Froehlich is a Senior Lecturer at UNSW Sydney and leads the CNS Gene Therapy group within the School of Biomedical Sciences. His research focuses on exploring innovative gene therapies for neurodegenerative disorders, particularly leukodystrophies, genetic diseases affecting the central nervous system's white matter that are associated with early onset, substantial mortality, and lack effective treatments. With a robust background in genetics, neuroscience, and molecular cell biology, Dr. Froehlich has substantially advanced the understanding of these diseases. His work has successfully utilized refined CNS-targeted gene therapy to rescue disease pathology in mouse models. He has over 14 years of experience in translational neuroscience and in vivo disease modeling. Currently, Dr. Froehlich's research program, supported by various grants, also examines dementias, specifically globular glial tauopathies, and hereditary spastic paraplegias. He contributes to other academic roles, including serving on the UNSW Animal Care Ethics Committee and as an editorial board member for the journal Rare Disease and Orphan Drugs. He actively engages with the non-scientific community and serves as a Vice President at Leukodystrophy Australia and as a Scientific Advisory Board member for the Mission Massimo Foundation.
