Biography

Dominique Bregent-Heald is a professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland, where she teaches a range of undergraduate and graduate courses primarily focused on United States, film, and cultural history. Her academic work specializes in the intricate histories of motion pictures and world’s fairs, particularly during the peak of the international exhibition movement in the United States between 1893 and 1964. Bregent-Heald investigates how films and world expositions engaged in nation branding practices, advancing cultural, economic, or political agendas on an international level. She also delves into film screenings as ethnographic representation sites that reinforce ideologies of imperialism and colonialism. Additionally, her research interests include comparative border studies through Hollywood cinema and the impact of tourism on filmic representations of Canada. She aims to provide her graduate students with multidisciplinary approaches to history, advanced techniques in archival and digital research, and an understanding of the significance of visual primary source materials.
