Biography

Dominique Rey is an Associate Professor in the School of Art at the University of Manitoba, with a multidisciplinary artistic practice that encompasses photography, video, performance, collage, and sculpture. Her work delves into peripheral subjectivities and examines the experiences of individuals and groups at the margins of dominant culture. Rey's performance-based works explore the unconscious aspects of societal structures and the experiences of outsiders. She has been actively engaged in recontextualization and translation practices, creating large-scale sculptures derived from photographic archives. Currently, she is developing a series titled 'Mother/Ground,' exploring the complex relationships between mothers and children through performative imagery. Rey’s exhibitions and installations have received recognition in various contemporary art venues across Canada and internationally. She has participated in multiple solo and group exhibitions, and her work has been collected by notable institutions like the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the National Gallery of Canada. Rey’s contributions to contemporary art have been acknowledged through numerous awards and grants, including the Manitoba Arts Council Visual Arts Grant and the Canada Council Arts Research Creation Grant. Through her artistic lens, she invites viewers to reconsider notions of connection, identity, and the structure of modern relationships.
