Dr. Don Randel

Biography

Don Michael Randel is a prominent American musicologist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago. He previously served as the twelfth president of the university and held a significant role in the Department of Music during his tenure. Before joining the University of Chicago, he was on the faculty at Cornell University, where he chaired the Department of Music and served as Provost and Dean of Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences. Randel specializes in music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance and has published extensively in areas related to Mozarabic chant, Arabic music theory, and Latin American popular music. He has worked on notable figures such as Rubén Blades and continues to research the works of Schumann and Cole Porter. Randel has also contributed to major dictionaries of music, including serving as the editor for the fourth editions of the Harvard Dictionary of Music, the Harvard Biographical Dictionary of Music, and the Harvard Concise Dictionary of Music and Musicians. His scholarly articles have appeared in various prestigious journals such as Études Gregoriennes, Musical Quarterly, Journal of the American Musicological Society, and others.
