Dr. Don Welsh

Biography

Dr. Don Welsh is a professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Western University. He received his PhD from the University of Guelph and holds a Master’s degree from the University of British Columbia as well as a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Calgary. His research focuses on the regulation of vascular function, particularly how resistance arteries control blood flow in hollow organs. His laboratory employs techniques such as patch clamp electrophysiology, pressure myography, and confocal microscopy to understand the cellular mechanisms underlying arterial contractility. Dr. Welsh's team investigates the role of ion channels and intercellular communication in smooth muscle and endothelial cells, aiming to unravel the pathophysiology of vascular diseases like hypertension and dyslipidemia. He has published numerous influential studies over the years in reputable journals, elucidating the biophysical underpinnings of vascular regulation. His current research is funded by prestigious grants from various Canadian health and research agencies. Recently, he has been exploring the mechanotransduction pathways that allow smooth muscle and endothelial cells to sense and respond to changes in blood flow and pressure, highlighting the intricate relationship between mechanical forces and vascular health.
