Dr. Don Zack

Biography

Don Zack is a Professor in the Solomon H. Snyder Department of Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University. He specializes in the application of molecular biology approaches to understand retinal function and pathology. His research is focused on defining the mechanisms regulating photoreceptor and ganglion cell gene expression, particularly in the context of retinal diseases. His ongoing projects include studying gene expression changes associated with photoreceptor degeneration, utilizing a variety of models including transgenic mice and cell cultures. Zack has been involved in significant collaborations that delve into the genetic basis of retinal diseases, particularly mutations in the CRX gene and their associations with cone-rod dystrophy and Leber congenital amaurosis. His laboratory is also engaged in developing new animal models to study retinal diseases and investigate potential therapeutic strategies to modify gene expression in the retina.
