I carried out my PhD in Professor Wim Meijer’s laboratory at University College Dublin, Ireland, studying intracellular survival mechanisms of the opportunistic pathogen Rhodococcus equi. After that, I moved to Boston where I completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Professor Beth McCormick’s laboratory at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital, focusing on mucosal immunology in Salmonella Typhimurium infection and intestinal inflammation involving migrating neutrophils. I also completed a postdoctoral position in Professor Peter Ghazal’s Division of Pathway Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, studying the immune response to herpes virus infections, particularly how cytomegalovirus reactivates latency in response to host stimuli. I then moved to the University of Glasgow to assume my current position as a Principal Investigator and Lecturer. My research combines diverse experiences with a focus on the host response to microbial infection, particularly how bacteria interact with Programmed Cell Death pathways.
