Dr. Donald Ballance is a Senior Lecturer in the Systems Power & Energy group at the James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow. His research focuses on control theory and system modeling, particularly in the application of Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) and Model Predictive Control (MPC), as well as the development techniques for continuous-time nonlinear systems. He has worked extensively with Professor Peter Gawthrop on the development of bond graph techniques for modeling, simulation, and analysis of control systems. Dr. Ballance has significant experience with real-time systems and has utilized various platforms, including dSPACE and MATLAB, on UNIX and Windows systems, as well as direct coding in C for PC cards across DOS and Windows environments and Real-Time Linux Control on Intel platforms. Apart from his research, he is actively involved in teaching large classes in the early years of engineering education, covering subjects such as Engineering Mathematics and Engineering Skills. He is a Chartered Engineer and a member of both the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and he undertakes academic accreditation visits on behalf of the IET. He has also served as an external examiner at the University of Aberdeen, University of Strathclyde, and Robert Gordon University, and he has contributed as an external expert for internal reviews at several universities.
