Dr. Donald Engelman

Biography

Donald Engelman is the Eugene Higgins Professor at Yale School of Medicine, specializing in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. He received his BA in Physics from Reed College and his PhD in Molecular Biophysics at Yale, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Francisco, and King's College London. Engelman's research focuses on the structure and function of biological membranes, particularly the folding and oligomerization of membrane proteins. His innovative work includes utilizing pH-dependent peptide insertion technology for selective delivery of molecules into cells within acidic tissues, like tumors. He has held significant positions at Yale, including chair of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry and acting dean of Yale College. Engelman's contributions are acknowledged by memberships in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, along with various visiting appointments at prestigious institutions like Stanford and Cambridge. His extensive research output reflects his leadership in biophysical studies of membrane dynamics, signaling mechanisms, and therapeutic applications.
