Donald W. Forsyth is the James Manning Professor Emeritus in Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Science at Brown University. He earned his Ph.D. and undergraduate degree in physics from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution/MIT Joint Program. His post-doctoral research was conducted at the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory at Columbia University. Forsyth's research focuses on seafloor processes, particularly at mid-ocean ridges, and the properties of the lithosphere and asthenosphere. He has developed four major research lines, including marine geophysical studies using ocean-bottom seismometers and investigating the dynamics of mid-ocean ridge tectonics. Forsyth is also the chief scientist for the GLIMPSE project, which explores the volcanic ridges of the Pacific Ocean. His contributions to geophysics have been recognized through multiple awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the AGU Macelwane Award, and election to the National Academy of Sciences. He has been actively involved with the American Geophysical Union and the Seismological Society of America, and has taught a variety of courses related to geophysics at Brown University.
