Dr. Donald Landes

Biography

Donald Landes is a full professor specializing in phenomenology, existentialism, and contemporary philosophy. He obtained his master's degree in philosophy from Dalhousie University in Halifax and pursued his doctoral research at the Department of Philosophy at Stony Brook University (SUNY) in New York. During his doctoral studies, he spent two years as a visiting researcher at the Sorbonne in Paris. He was subsequently a postdoctoral fellow at the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council at McGill University from 2010 to 2012 and taught at Concordia University from 2012 to 2015. In 2015, he joined the Faculty of Philosophy and the Laboratory of Continental Philosophy at Laval University, where he is currently a full professor. He is particularly known for his English translations of Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology of Perception (Routledge, 2012) and Bergson's Creative Evolution (Routledge, 2023), as well as his work Merleau-Ponty Paradoxes Expression (Bloomsbury, 2013), alongside numerous articles and collections on topics ranging from corporeality to ethics. Landes publishes and teaches 20th-century French philosophy, from Bergson to Deleuze, and is interested in continental feminism, critical phenomenology, aesthetics, technology (including AI), and contemporary ethics.
