Biography

Donald MacLaren gained his PhD degree from Cornell University in 1970. He has worked at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland from 1970 to 1988, serving as a Lecturer and then as a Senior Lecturer in Agricultural Economics. During this time, he undertook consulting work with the European Commission, European Parliament, and National Consumer Council. In 1988, he took a position at the University of Melbourne in the School of Agriculture and Forestry, becoming Head of the Agricultural Economics and Extension Section from 1990 to 1993. He joined the Department of Economics in 1996, serving as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce until 1998. Donald has held visiting positions at Cornell University, University of California at Davis, Stanford University, OECD, and WTO. He served as a WTO panelist and consultant for the OECD and World Bank. Donald is a member of the International Agricultural Trade Research Consortium and the Global Trade Analysis Project. In 2012, he retired from full-time employment and is currently an Honorary Professorial Fellow in the Department of Economics. In 2014, he was named a Distinguished Fellow by the Australian Agricultural Resource Economics Society.
