Biography

Donald MacLeod holds a D.Phil in social anthropology from the University of Oxford and currently serves as a Senior Lecturer in Social and Environmental Sustainability at the University of Glasgow. He has a rich background in teaching social anthropology, having served as a visiting professor at the Department of Anthropology at Macalester College in the USA, taught at Goldsmiths' College, University of London, and tutored in the Human Sciences programme at the University of Oxford. His research interests include tourism, globalization, cultural change, ecotourism, sustainable development, identity branding, and cultural heritage. MacLeod has conducted extensive fieldwork across various regions, including a long-term study in Scotland focused on tourism and environmental heritage since 2001, along with research in the Dominican Republic investigating sustainable development within a sociocultural context from 1999 to 2000, and examining the impact of tourism on fishing settlements in the Canary Islands between 1990 and 1991. He has also held significant research grants and has been a principal investigator in multiple funded projects, demonstrating his active engagement with both academic and practical aspects of social anthropology.
