Biography

Dr. Donatella Bonansinga is a Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, focusing on populism from an interdisciplinary perspective, encompassing political science, international relations, and political psychology. Her research specializes in the emotional and psychological mechanisms that underpin populist support, particularly through the analysis of populist communication and emotional narratives. She has guest-edited four special issues on populism and emotions for the American Behavioral Scientist. Her recent studies investigate the roles of emotions such as anger, fear, pride, and hope in populist communication, as well as the narratives of crisis and insecurity related to both the radical right and left. Additionally, she explores visual populism, including its representation on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, and the mainstreaming of the radical right in contemporary politics. Prior to her role at Southampton, Dr. Bonansinga was an Associate Lecturer at UCL, and held positions at YouGov. She holds a PhD in Political Science and International Studies from the University of Birmingham, as well as multiple master's degrees in Social Research Methods, European Politics, and Global Politics. Dr. Bonansinga is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has actively participated in various political studies associations.
