Biography

Dongyang Li is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta. His research interests include material design, surface and interfacial science, wear, corrosion-wear synergy, and computational materials science. He has made significant contributions to the field with over 530 scientific publications, including more than 480 refereed journal articles. Li's academic journey began with a B.Sc. in Theoretical Applied Mechanics from the University of Science and Technology of China, followed by an M.Sc. in Condensed Matter Physics from Sun Yat-sen University, a Ph.D. in Materials Physics from the University of Science and Technology Beijing, and a Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering from McGill University. He joined the University of Alberta in 1998 after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Pennsylvania State University. Li also holds an adjunct professorship in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Alberta and other foreign institutions. His numerous accolades include the MetSoc Airey Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2025, the Physics Award from MetSoc-CIM in 2024, and the 2020 Distinguished Materials Scientist Award. He has served on the editorial board of eighteen technical journals and has been an invited contributor to prestigious handbooks and encyclopaedias, such as those published by Elsevier, Springer, and ASM International, focusing on wear and tribology.
