Donya Alinejad researches the role of digital media in society and culture, focusing on its influence on people's experiences related to spatial mobility, community formation, emotional care, and the communication of scientific knowledge. She is particularly interested in the theories of digital mediation and the methods used to research the role of platforms in society, especially how power operates within the relationship between technologies and users. Her work has earned recognition from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) with an Early Career Award. Donya has a background in social and cultural anthropology and has conducted ethnographic field research employing mixed methods to study digital media in the Netherlands, Turkey, and Romania. Due to her work on disinformation and science communication, she is a member of the sector plan for Welfare, Participation, and Citizenship in the Digital World, as well as involved in the implementation of a national Social Sciences and Humanities sector plan on the Digital Society. Currently, she investigates how platforms shape public communication regarding scientifically contested issues such as climate change and COVID-19. Donya has been invited to share her expertise at the EU level with the Alliance of European Academies of Science (ALLEA) and at the national level with the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).
