Biography

Doriane Coleman is the Thomas L. Perkins Distinguished Professor of Law at Duke University School of Law, specializing in interdisciplinary scholarship that focuses on women, sports, medicine, and law. Her work has been published in numerous U.S. and international journals and frequently cited in media. Recently, her research has centered on sex and the evolving definitions and implications within societal and legal frameworks. Coleman authored a trade book titled "Sex Gender – A Commonsense Approach" and has written law review articles discussing topics such as sex neutrality in sports. She also engages in public commentary and consults for international sports governing bodies regarding eligibility rules for female athletes. Coleman chairs the Athletic Council at Duke and is a co-director of the Center for Sports Law and Policy. Additionally, she is a member of the Advisory Council of the Kenan Institute for Ethics and a Faculty Associate at the Trent Center for Bioethics, Humanities & History in the School of Medicine. Coleman holds a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown Law (1988) and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University (1982). Before her legal career, she was a competitive runner, racing 800 meters at the collegiate level as well as in post-collegiate international events.
