Biography

Dorien Manting is a professor with a special appointment in spatial demography at the University of Amsterdam since 2013. She is also a senior scientific researcher at the Department of Urbanization and Transport of the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) in The Hague since 2020. Previously, she served as the head of the Department of Urbanization and Transport at PBL from 2008 to 2020. A graduate in Urban Planning and Demography from the University of Amsterdam, she completed her dissertation on marriage and cohabitation in the 1990s. Her research focuses on spatial demography, particularly on residential mobility, housing trajectories of migrant groups, and the effects of demographic life events on social-spatial behavior and car mobility. Manting coordinates a research program on housing market issues in collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences Amsterdam (HvA) and various housing cooperatives, aiming to address challenges faced by key workers in the Metropolitan area of Amsterdam. She actively participates in research projects exploring the housing trajectories of newly arrived migrants in the Netherlands, employing a life course perspective to investigate how life course changes interact with their housing situations.
