Dr. Dorien Nieuwenhuijsen

Biography

Dorien Nieuwenhuijsen is an Associate Professor of Spanish Linguistics at Utrecht University, where she also serves as the Director of the Studies of the Graduate School of Languages, Literature, and Communication (TLC) within the Faculty of Humanities. Her research primarily focuses on the historical development of the Spanish language, specifically its syntax and the variation and change in contemporary Spanish as spoken in both Spain and Latin America. She is particularly interested in the internal and external factors influencing linguistic variation and change. To gather data, she utilizes large digital language corpora and examines the opportunities that digital tools provide for the study of historical linguistics. Nieuwenhuijsen is involved in several research projects, including one titled "Diccionario histórico de las perífrasis verbales del español. Gramática, pragmática y discurso (III). Perífrasis formadas a partir de verbos superléxicos y de movimiento," conducted in collaboration with the University of Barcelona, and is associated with the research group Grup de Gramàtica Diacronia (Gradia), which is recognized as a consolidated group by the Agència de Gestió d'Ajuts Universitaris de Recerca (AGAUR) Generalitat de Catalunya. Additionally, she participates in the research project "Procesos de lexicalización y gramaticalización en la historia del español: cambio, variación y pervivencia en la historia discursiva del español" with the Complutense University of Madrid.
