Dr. Dorine Swinkels

Biography

Dorine Swinkels is a professor at Radboud University Medical Centre with an endowed chair in Experimental Clinical Chemistry. She is a trained medical doctor and biochemist specialized in Laboratory Medicine. Her research primarily focuses on understanding iron metabolism, with particular attention to identifying and characterizing novel factors that affect the dysregulation of iron homeostasis in kidney diseases and rare inherited iron disorders. Swinkels has specific expertise in translating novel findings into diagnostic assays and therapeutic strategies that can be implemented in clinical guidelines. As a laboratory manager, she aims to further professionalize laboratory activities at Radboudumc by employing optimal pre-analytical handling of human samples. Additionally, she participates in international academic societies and committees within the fields of hematology and biomedical iron research development. Apart from her scientific contributions, she is keen on transferring knowledge regarding diagnostic tools to both scientific and clinical pharmaceutical communities and serves as a consultant to advise on drug development aimed at modulating iron disorders. Her teaching engagements include both diagnostic medicine and translational research for students in medicine and biomedical sciences.
