Biography

Doris Warriner is an educational anthropologist who investigates the social, political, economic, and ideological dimensions of language, literacy, and mobility, focusing on the relationship between communicative practices and the lived experiences of learning trajectories in immigrant and refugee families. Her scholarship and teaching draw from theories and approaches in linguistic anthropology, educational anthropology, applied linguistics, and literacy studies to illustrate how social practices are influenced by large-scale processes of displacement, ethnic conflict, immigration, transnationalism, and climate change. Warriner joined the anthropology department at Northwestern University in 2023, after serving as a Professor of English at Arizona State University. She received her doctorate in 2003 from the University of Pennsylvania, where her dissertation, entitled 'Here English Dead': Language Ideologies Experiences of Women Refugees Enrolled in an Adult ESL Program, was awarded the 2005 Outstanding Dissertation Award by the Council on Anthropology and Education of the American Anthropological Association. Her recent publications have appeared in journals such as Theory and Practice, Curriculum Inquiry, and the Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development. Additionally, she has edited and co-edited several volumes on topics related to refugee education and the social impact of applied linguistics. Currently, Warriner's research includes narrative analysis to illuminate interactional accomplishments in qualitative research interviews and to understand the dynamics of social identification among migrant youth in the context of climate displacement.
