Dr. Dorottya Fabian

Biography

Dorottya Fabian is a professor at the University of New South Wales, specializing in the history and culture of European concert music tradition, particularly in performance. With a strong academic background, she holds a BMus (Hon) from 1983, an MMus from 1989, and a PhD from 1999. Her research focuses on analyzing changes in interpretations of Western Classical music, as evidenced through commercial sound recordings and historical documents. She has published extensively, with over 50 publications, and her investigations employ both technical and expressive dimensions of music, primarily concerning string, vocal, and keyboard players' repertoires. Additionally, Fabian is interested in audience responses and the aesthetic preferences associated with music performance, adopting both quantitative and qualitative methods in her empirical research. Her significant contributions to the field have led her to hold multiple leadership roles and awards, including being elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Humanities in 2010. She is also a member of several editorial and advisory boards for notable music publications and has actively participated in academic governance. In terms of teaching, she instructs undergraduate courses focusing on European music history and research methods, while also being involved in supervision at the master's level.
