Biography

Douglas Cheney, Ph.D., is a national leader in the field of special education with over 42 years of experience, particularly focusing on emotional and behavioral disabilities. He co-directed the School Mental Health Research, Assessment, and Training Center (SMART) at the University of Washington. Doug has extensive experience in educational reform and policy related to developmental disabilities. He was the director of Washington’s Behavior Research Center from 2004 to 2010 and has led various evidence-based practice initiatives. Dr. Cheney has served as an Associate Editor for the Intervention in School and Clinic journal and held editorial positions in Behavioral Disorders and the Journal of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders. He has received significant awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from Washington state's positive behavior support network in 2010 and the Frederick J. Weintraub Outstanding Leadership Award in 2017. Doug is also a past president of the International Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders and has chaired multiple national conventions. He currently consults for the Center for Inclusive Education in Sofia, Bulgaria, helping local schools enhance inclusive educational practices for students with disabilities.
