Doug Kiel is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Northwestern University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2012. His research focuses on Indigenous histories, particularly in the American Midwest, and emphasizes Indigenous law and policy, as well as U.S. colonialism. Kiel is the author of the forthcoming book, 'Unsettling Territory: Oneida Nation Resurgence and Anti-Sovereignty Backlash' from Yale University Press. He has received the prestigious Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s New Directions Fellowship for 2025–2027 and is currently working on a new book entitled 'Power and Land: Race, Colonialism, and the American Midwest,' exploring how settler colonialism, racial capitalism, and industrial transformation intersect with grassroots struggles for sovereignty and liberation. Furthermore, Kiel has been involved in various museum exhibitions and serves on several advisory committees, including for the new Wisconsin History Center expected to open in 2026. He has also testified before the U.S. House Representatives regarding significant Indigenous issues and currently serves on the Illinois Holocaust and Genocide Commission.
