Biography

Doug Richards is a clinical sport physician and biomechanist. He was educated in medicine at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1979, and earned a Diploma in Sport Medicine from the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine in 1989. He has worked at the University of Toronto’s David L. MacIntosh Sport Medicine Clinic from 1984 to 2021, serving as medical director from 1989 to 2021. Doug has a background in mathematics and engineering sciences from the University of Toronto and studied graduate biomechanics at the University of Waterloo. He has been a professor at the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Toronto since 1991. Throughout his career, Doug organized and provided medical services at various national and international sporting events, acting as team physician for the University of Toronto’s Varsity Blues intercollegiate teams from 1984 to 2021, and Canada’s women's national basketball team from 1987 to 2021, among others. He served as team physician for the Toronto Raptors for nine years between 1995 and 2004. In 2021, he retired from medical practice to focus full-time on teaching. Doug teaches four undergraduate courses in sport medicine, biomechanics, and personal health, as well as graduate courses in the Master of Professional Kinesiology program. His research interests are primarily focused on concussions, sports biomechanics, and injury prevention. In addition to his academic pursuits, Doug is an avid cyclist, riding approximately 8,000 kilometers per year.
