Biography

Douglas Biow is the Superior Oil Company-Linward Shivers Centennial Professor of Medieval Renaissance Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. His research interests encompass themes of masculinities and individualism within this historical context. He holds a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University and has published extensively on the subject, with notable works including 'Mirabile Dictu: Representations of Marvelous Medieval Renaissance Italy' (1996), 'Doctors, Ambassadors, Secretaries: Humanism and the Professions in Renaissance Italy' (2002), which earned him the Robert W. Hamilton Book Award, and 'Culture of Cleanliness in Renaissance Italy' (2006), recognized as a Choice Outstanding Title. His recent publication, 'Vasari's Words: Lives of Artists and the History of Ideas in the Italian Renaissance' (2018), reflects his ongoing contributions to the field. He has received numerous scholarly awards, including fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Delmas, and Guggenheim.
