Dr. Douglas Hughes

Biography

Douglas H. Hughes, MD, is an Emeritus Professor at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, specializing in Psychiatry. He earned his MD from the University of Missouri School of Medicine in 1981, where he completed his residency and chief residency in Psychiatry at Tufts Medical Center. Dr. Hughes has received numerous awards for his teaching contributions and has consulted for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on issues related to suicidal and violent behavior. His extensive lecturing experience includes engagements across Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Americas. In addition to his teaching and consulting roles, he has served as column editor for the American Psychiatric Association journal, Psychiatric Services, and held leadership positions in professional organizations such as the American Association for Emergency Psychiatry. He was appointed Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in 2011, where he focused on the integrated curriculum and technological advancements in medical education. Dr. Hughes has published many peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on topics including homicide and suicide, and he has been involved with several psychiatric journals as an editorial board member. Notably, he helped develop the Principles Integrating Sciences and Medicine curriculum and established the Office of Affiliated Sites. His work has significantly influenced medical education at BUSM as well as mental health practices nationwide.
