Biography

Douglas MacMartin is an Associate Professor at the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University. His research focuses on Sunlight Reflection Methods (SRM), also known as climate engineering, solar geoengineering, and climate intervention. He helps develop a knowledge base necessary to support informed future societal decisions in this challenging and controversial field. He has published extensively on the subject and has provided both public and academic presentations, including briefings for the UN Environment Program and testimony before Congress. He served as a member of a National Academies panel that made recommendations for research governance in March 2021. MacMartin received his Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT in 1992, and his previous positions include work at the United Technologies Research Center from 1994 to 2000 and at the California Institute of Technology from 2000 to 2015. His research is funded by the NSF and the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainable Future.
