Douglas Mahoney is a translational scientist at the Charbonneau Cancer Institute and Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute within the Cumming School of Medicine. Over the past 15 years, he has made significant contributions to the development of multiple cancer immunotherapies tested in human clinical trials. His lab focuses on understanding how rhabdoviruses interact with immune cells, utilizing this knowledge to engineer 'designer viruses' that evoke anti-cancer immunity to improve Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy for cancer. Employing cutting-edge synthetic biology, high-resolution in vivo imaging, and robotic screening technologies, his methodologies facilitate collaboration with leading genomics and immunology labs across Alberta. Dr. Mahoney is also the Scientific Director of a new research initiative called ACTION (Alberta Cellular Therapy Immune Oncology), launched in 2020 in partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society. His team is dedicated to developing innovative next-generation engineered T cell therapies targeting novel markers identified in high-fatality solid tumors. His research centers on using live viruses to stimulate the natural immune system's ability to attack and eliminate cancer cells, focusing on pediatric solid tumors. Throughout his research career, he has participated in various university strategic initiatives and has been acknowledged with numerous awards for his contributions to science.
