Dr. Douglas Marchuk

Biography

Douglas Alan Marchuk is a James B. Duke Distinguished Professor at Duke University, specializing in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology. His research primarily focuses on genetics related to vascular malformations, particularly Cerebral Cavernous Malformations (CCM). His significant contributions include the identification of causative genes for CCM and the development of an authentic animal model for studying this disease. Marchuk has pioneered methods for investigating somatic mutations and clonal expansions in vascular diseases, demonstrating mechanisms involved in both benign and malignant vascular malformations. Additionally, he has worked extensively on Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT), establishing genetic linkages and uncovering distinct genetic phenotypes associated with this condition. His research has implications for understanding the molecular pathogenesis of various vascular anomalies and developing potential therapeutic approaches.
