Biography

Doug McAdam is the Ray Lyman Wilbur Professor of Sociology at Stanford University and the Director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. He has authored or co-authored 18 books and 85 publications primarily in the area of political sociology, with a special emphasis on race in the U.S., American politics, and the study of social movements within 'contentious politics.' His significant works include 'Political Process and the Development of Black Insurgency, 1930-1970,' a new edition published in 1999 by the University of Chicago Press, and 'Freedom Summer,' published in 1988 by Oxford University Press, which was recognized as a finalist for the C. Wright Mills Award in 1990. He also co-authored 'Dynamics of Contention' in 2001 with Sidney Tarrow and Charles Tilly, and wrote 'Theory of Fields' published in 2012 by Oxford University Press. His forthcoming work discusses the origins of deep political and economic divisions characterizing contemporary America, also through Oxford University Press. In 2003, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
