Biography

Douglas L. Noordsy, MD, is a Clinical Professor and Director of Lifestyle Psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. He co-founded the Sports Psychology & Psychiatry clinic. Prior to this role, Dr. Noordsy was a Professor of Psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. His research primarily focuses on the effects of physical exercise and neurotrophic factors on brain volume, function, mental health, and well-being. He has a particular interest in the role of physical exercise in preventing the progression of early psychosis, as well as the social and physical aspects of team sports. Dr. Noordsy is a member of the American College of Psychiatry, the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, and is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He has served on the editorial boards of the Community Mental Health Journal and Mental Health & Physical Activity. In recognition of his contributions to the field, he received the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness in 2001, and the Excellence in Leadership Award from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford in 2018.
