Biography

Douglas C. Rees is the Roscoe Gilkey Dickinson Professor of Chemistry and the Executive Officer for Biochemistry at the California Institute of Technology. After completing his B.S. at Yale University in 1974 and earning his Ph.D. at Harvard University in 1980, he joined Caltech as a professor in 1989. Over the years, Rees has held numerous administrative roles, including Executive Officer for Chemistry from 2002 to 2006, and Dean of Graduate Studies from 2015 to 2020. His current research focuses on protein structure and energetics, particularly examining the structures and mechanisms of complex metalloproteins and integral membrane proteins involved in ATP-dependent transduction processes. He has made significant contributions to understanding the structural basis of photosynthesis and the transport processes of bacterial ATP Binding Cassette transporters. His investigations have also emphasized the role of unusual molybdenum and tungsten-containing centers in biological systems, particularly in nitrogen fixation. Rees' work integrates structural biology with bioenergetics, exploring how energy transduction systems operate at the molecular level.
