Biography

Douglas Samuel's research program spans basic personality science and psychopathology, utilizing dimensional models to improve the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. His research indicates that personality disorders (PD) can be understood as maladaptive collections of traits that describe normal personality functioning, particularly through the lens of the Five-Factor Model. Samuel has explored the translation and dissemination of these dimensional models in treatment settings. He also focuses on rural mental health, particularly suicide risk factors affecting farmers and their families, employing a variety of statistical approaches and methodologies to emphasize unique information provided by diverse sources. His expertise includes measurement of psychological phenomena, underscored by his past role as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Assessment. Samuel is actively recruiting graduate students for Fall 2025 admissions.
