Biography

Douglas Sanderson, a member of the Opaskwayak Cree Nation, holds the Prichard Wilson Chair in Law and Public Policy at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. He is a managing editor of the inaugural edition of the Indigenous Law Journal and earned his LL.M. at Columbia University as a Fulbright Scholar. Sanderson's professional experience includes serving as a Senior Advisor to the Government of Ontario. His research areas encompass Aboriginal and Indigenous legal theory, property law, and public-private legal theory, with a focus on the reconciliation of common law property rights and constitutional land/treaty rights. He is particularly interested in the historical context of Peace and Friendship Treaties and the fur trade in Canada. His book, Valley Birdtail, co-authored with Andrew Stobo Sniderman, has received multiple accolades, including the 2023 Stubbendieck Great Plains Distinguished Book Prize and the 2023 John W. Dafoe Book Prize. Sanderson teaches courses on Discerning Law and Indigenous Legal Traditions at the University.
