Biography

Dr. Douglas G. Thomson graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1983 with a 1st Class Honours Degree in Aeronautical Engineering and obtained his PhD in the same field. He has worked as a research assistant funded by the Royal Aerospace Establishment and received a Royal Society University Research Fellowship, which enabled him to conduct independent research in inverse simulation. In 1993, he joined the Department of Aerospace Engineering as a senior lecturer in flight dynamics and served as Head of the Department for seven years from 2000. Upon the restructuring of the Faculty of Engineering in 2010, he was appointed Head of the Aerospace Sciences Research Division and is currently the Chief Adviser of Studies in Engineering. His research focuses on rotorcraft flight dynamics and includes the development of widely-used inverse simulation techniques applicable to rotorcraft. Recent research applications include developing evasion strategies for helicopters and guidance for underwater vehicles, with ongoing work in autogyro flight dynamics and simulation of flight testing.
