Dr. Douglas Zochodne is a Neurologist and Neuroscientist who serves as the Divisional Director of Neurology at the University of Alberta and as the Director of the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute. He completed his MD and FRCPC in Neurology at the University of Western Ontario, training under Dr. Charles Bolton, and then went on to undertake a research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic with Drs. Philip Low and Peter J. Dyck. Dr. Zochodne has held faculty positions at Queen’s University and the University of Calgary before joining the University of Alberta. With a career dedicated to understanding the biology of diseases of the peripheral nervous system, he has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences and as President of the Peripheral Nerve Society. His research is heavily focused on diabetic polyneuropathy and peripheral neuron regeneration, emphasizing intrinsic molecular mechanisms and plasticity of adult sensory neurons as well as their relationship to diabetes. He has published over 280 research papers and chapters and has authored four books. His lab has been continuously funded since 1988, and currently it receives funding from CIHR and other sources.
