Biography

Drazen Prelec is a Professor of Management Science and Economics at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He also holds appointments in the Department of Economics and the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences. Prelec's research focuses on the psychology and neuroscience of decision-making, particularly in behavioral economics, neuroeconomics, risky choice, time discounting, self-control, and consumer behavior. He explores the development of normative decision theory and empirical failures of theory using behavioral fMRI methods. One of his current projects, 'self-signaling', examines the motivations behind individuals favoring actions that predict good outcomes, emphasizing the importance of diagnostic motivation for human self-control. He is also developing systems, referred to as 'Bayesian truth serum', that evaluate individual and collective judgments based on an external truth criterion. Prelec has received numerous distinguished research awards, including the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. He earned an AB in Applied Mathematics from Harvard College and a PhD in Experimental Psychology from Harvard University.
