Born in the bluegrass region of Kentucky, Drew Hammond began singing in church choirs and playing piano at an early age. He majored in music at Guilford College in North Carolina, with a minor in geology, balancing music performance in classical and jazz genres. In the mid-to-late 1990s, he toured the United States with various bands before moving to Glasgow, Scotland, to study composition. He was awarded a PhD in composition in 2009. From 2008 to 2018, he taught composition and jazz keyboard at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland before taking a full-time position at the University of Glasgow. He teaches a range of music courses including composition, creative practice, performance, music history, music theory, technique, recording, jazz keyboard, and sonic arts. His research interests are diverse, encompassing music and place, ecopoetics, music in the natural world, liturgical vocal music, fixed media, improvisation, jazz, rock, blues, and country music. Additionally, he is the founder of the Scottish Composition Pedagogy Network and actively supervises postgraduate research students.
