Biography

Dritan Agalliu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University. His research focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate the formation and breakdown of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in the central nervous system (CNS). His laboratory employs a variety of genetic, molecular, cellular, and imaging approaches to study CNS diseases, such as stroke and autoimmune disorders. Notably, he has developed novel mouse strains that allow for the visualization of changes in the BBB's structural components, including tight junctions and caveolae, in living animals. Additionally, Dr. Agalliu explores the role of Wnt/β-catenin signaling in the development of CNS vasculature and the formation of the BBB, as well as the mechanisms of immune cell entry into the CNS, particularly in relation to neuropsychiatric disorders linked to Streptococcus pyogenes infections.
