Biography

Duncan Bassett is a Professor in Endocrinology at Imperial College London and a Consultant Physician specializing in Metabolic Bone Disease. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Pathology from Cambridge University and a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Oxford University. Professor Bassett undertook research training at the Medical Research Council Clinical Sciences Centre, first as a Clinical Training Fellow and later as a Clinician Scientist. He completed his PhD at Imperial College in 2000 and became a Professor in 2013, and a Wellcome Trust Investigator in 2016. As the Principal Investigator of the Molecular Endocrinology Laboratory within the Department of Medicine at Hammersmith Hospital, his current research focuses on understanding the fundamental cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie skeletal development and maintenance. His work has been pivotal in identifying new genetic determinants of bone mass and strength, receiving Wellcome Trust Strategic Award funding for these investigations. Professor Bassett is particularly interested in thyroid hormone action and its critical role in bone and cartilage metabolism. He has been actively involved in international collaborations and has received numerous awards for his research achievements. His contributions to the field of endocrinology have established him as a leading expert in skeletal phenotyping and thyroid hormone research.
