Dr. Duncan Ironmonger

Biography

Duncan Ironmonger is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Melbourne. He has extensive experience in economic research with a focus on household economics, time use statistics, and macroeconomics. He holds a Master of Commerce from the University of Melbourne and a PhD in Economics from the University of Cambridge. Since 2001, he has been a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. Ironmonger began his statistical career over 60 years ago at the Australian Bureau of Statistics in Canberra. In 1966, he joined the University of Melbourne, serving as Senior Research Fellow within the Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research before rising to the position of Deputy Director. He later directed the Centre for Applied Research at the Faculty of Architecture and Planning and the Households Research Unit within the Department of Economics. His research contributions include foundational work in household input-output tables and Gross Household Product estimates, alongside interests in the dynamics of household size and demography. He has consulted for various government departments and international organizations, including the UNDP and AusAID, and has been involved in econometric modeling for over three decades. Ironmonger is also the foundation editor of the Australian Economic Review.
