Biography

Duncan Richards is a Climax Professor of Clinical Therapeutics at the University of Oxford's Medical Sciences Division. He has established a new Centre for Clinical Therapeutics based at the Botnar Research Centre in St Hilda’s. His leadership involves collaboration with a diverse range of biomedical researchers in Oxford and engagement with the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries to drive new drug treatments and informed decision-making in early-phase clinical trials. Richards trained in medicine at Oxford University and took on junior doctor roles in London before returning to Oxford as a Clinical Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology. His doctoral research focused on developing a translational model that utilizes platelet ion flux to interrogate angiotensin biology, and he is an author of the Oxford Handbook of Practical Drug Therapy. Previously, he worked at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) from 2003, where he held several clinical development roles leading to the launch of human files. Most recently, he served as the head of Clinical Pharmacology and Experimental Medicine and was the Research Director of GSK’s phase 1 experimental medicine unit in Cambridge. He is also a member of the MRC/NIHR EME Board and serves on committees for the British Pharmacological Society.
