Dr. Duncan Shaw

Biography

Duncan Shaw is a Professor of Operational Research and Critical Systems at the University of Manchester, where he has served since January 2015. He previously held similar positions at the University of Warwick and Aston Business School. His research focuses on enhancing societal resilience to crises, including the management of spontaneous volunteers in disaster recovery scenarios. Duncan has attracted over £19.7 million in research funding for various projects, including studies on community resilience and disaster management funded by sources such as the Economic and Social Research Council and the European Commission. He is actively involved in research that informs local government recovery planning, particularly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Duncan's work includes producing guidelines for local resilience and is recognized by several awards, including the Emergency Planning Society Team of the Year in 2021. He is also an Honorary Professor at the Humanitarian Conflict Response Institute and holds fellowships from various prestigious organizations.
