Biography

Duo Chan is a climate scientist focusing on developing statistical physical tools to understand how the Earth’s climate works, with the aim of improving the accuracy of climate projections. He joined the University of Southampton as a Lecturer in 2023, after earning a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2021. His research interests encompass a broad range of areas within climate science, including the development of the Dynamically Consistent ENsemble Temperature (DCENT) dataset, which reconciles model-data discrepancies from the 1960s and suggests a consistent pattern of temperature evolution aligned with human-induced climate change. Additionally, he studies air-sea coupling and its implications for hurricane genesis and atmospheric jets, as well as land-air interactions that impact continental heatwaves and crop production. Duo's work has been published in notable journals such as Nature, Food, Science Advances, the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, the Journal of Climate, Geophysical Research Letters, Earth's Future, the Harvard Data Science Review, and the Annals of Applied Statistics.
