Biography

Durga Borkar is a board-certified, fellowship-trained adult vitreoretinal surgeon. Her practice includes injection and laser-based treatment for retinal diseases, as well as handling complex surgical cases in the operating room. Dr. Borkar specializes in diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal vascular occlusion, macular edema, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, vitreomacular traction, and complex retinal detachments. Throughout her early career, she has co-authored 50 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. Dr. Borkar has received several awards including recognition for excellence in research and clinical care, the Heed Foundation Fellowship, the Society of Heed Fellows Award, and the AAO Advocacy Ambassador Award. She has presented her work at numerous national and international retina meetings. A Chicago native, Dr. Borkar completed her undergraduate and medical school training at Northwestern University and pursued general ophthalmology residency at Boston's Harvard Medical School-Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary. She further completed a vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospital, which is recognized for its high-volume surgical training programs.
