Dustin Flanagan is an NHMRC Senior Research Fellow at the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, leading the Cell Competition Niche Signalling Laboratory in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Melbourne, where he completed first-class honours in functional genomics and model organisms, specifically Drosophila melanogaster. Dustin developed genetically engineered mouse models and 3D-organoid cultures during his doctoral studies, focusing on adult stem cell populations in the gastrointestinal tract. He completed his PhD in Gastrointestinal Biology at the University of Melbourne in 2016 and then undertook postdoctoral research at Cancer Research UK’s Beatson Institute in Glasgow. His research explores how common tumour suppressor oncogenes impact stem cell fate and has produced significant insights into stem cells and intestinal tumorigenesis. In September 2021, he was awarded an NHMRC Investigator Grant to further his research at the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, where his current work investigates stem cell regulation through advanced cellular techniques to understand diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
