Biography

Dženita Karić is an Assistant Professor at the University of Amsterdam specializing in Religious Studies and Cultural Heritage. Her research primarily focuses on the religious history of the Balkans, with particular emphasis on Islam in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Ottoman Empire, and Islam in Europe broadly. Through her work, Karić explores Islamic rituals in Bosnia from a longue durée perspective and currently investigates the intersections of religion, piety, and the environment in the contemporary world. She obtained her PhD in 2018 from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. Prior to her current role, she worked at the Oriental Institute in Sarajevo (University of Sarajevo) from 2009 to 2020 and at the Berlin Institute of Islamic Theology (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) from 2020 to 2023. During the academic year 2019/2020, she was a Teach@Tübingen Fellow at Eberhard Karl University Tübingen. In her teaching, Karić covers courses on women in world religions and urban spiritualities, incorporating fieldwork practicum into her curriculum.
