Ebba Kurz is a Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. She holds a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology from Queen's University, where she also obtained her B.S. in Life Sciences. In 2006, she established her laboratory at the University of Calgary after completing her post-doctoral training at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Her research focuses on the role of topoisomerases, specifically topoisomerase IIα (TOP2A) and topoisomerase IIβ (TOP2B), in DNA damage repair and genomic stability, with a particular emphasis on breast cancer. Her lab investigates the mechanisms underlying the effects of chemotherapeutics that target topoisomerases, as well as the role of salicylate in modulating the efficacy of these drugs in breast cancer treatment. She is actively involved in the development of patient-derived tools for studying breast cancer in young women and is a member of the Calgary-based IN-SYNC collaboration. Additionally, she serves as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Health & Science Education in the Cumming School of Medicine, contributing to the education and training of future health professionals.
