Dr. Ebony Birchall

Biography

Dr. Ebony Birchall is a Senior Lecturer at Macquarie Law School and the Deputy Director of the BHR Access Justice Lab. She is a lawyer with a profound commitment to human rights and social justice. Dr. Birchall leads the Strategic Litigation Clinic at Macquarie, where she provides students with opportunities to engage in strategic litigation on various social justice issues, collaborating with leading Australian litigators. She supervises both honours and postgraduate research students, encouraging research on strategic litigation and accountability concerning businesses and governments. Her research interests include human rights abuses and the impact of powerful actors on society. Dr. Birchall has received recognition for her scholarly work, including the Macquarie University’s Emerging Scholar Award and an Early Mid-Career Researcher Fellowship. Currently, she is editing a collection on strategic human rights litigation in Australia, set to be published in 2025, and is drafting a book focused on Australia's immigration detention network. With qualifications including a PhD in law and studies in human rights from the University of Sydney and international human rights law from the University of Oxford, she has become a sought-after speaker in community and advocacy events, regularly contributing to major media discussions on critical issues.
